Second Thoughts Drama Group

Second Thoughts is generously supported by Stratford-upon-Avon Town Trust

Second Thoughts is a community-based drama group performing in and around Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, in the United Kingdom. Our President is David Bradley, best known for his role as Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films.

All  our own work...

One of the founding  ideas of Second Thoughts was to encourage and perform new writing, especially from within the group. Achieving that hasn't always been easy, when so many  ideas compete for space in the production schedule and the lure of great plays by established playwrights is so strong. All of the productions listed here,  original plays, adaptations and anthologies, are by Second Thoughts  members

Triple Freedom
by Steve Farr

A winner of the Hennesey Prize in Ireland, Steve wrote, directed and performed in this suite of three short plays, one of our  earliest productions.

Gasmasks and Gumption
compiled by Tim Raistrick

Tim  is well known around Stratford for his work in a variety of artistic fields. He devised Gasmasks and Gumption as a contribution to the celebrations to mark the  50th anniversary of VE Day. The story of Stratford's part in the war is told  through anecdotes and songs and was performed at venues all over South Warwickshire.

Great  Expectations
adapted by Reg Mitchell

Reg  has a long track record in theatre and wrote Great Expectations himself when he was unable to find a suitable published adaptation.

This War Without an Enemy
compiled and produced by Second Thoughts

The only Second Thoughts venture into recording, This War Without an Enemy tells the story of the English Civil War, using songs and transcripts from the time. It was issued as a cassette tape and sold to libraries and other outlets, including Cromwell’s House in Ely. A copy bought from there recently surfaced in San Diego, where a teacher is using it with his history class.

The Sword  and the Sorrow
compiled by Maggie Curtis and Mairi Macdonald

The  Sword and the Sorrow tells the tragic story in words and song of Bonnie Prince  Charlie and the Great Rebellion.

Measure  for Measure
adapted by Graham Tyrer

Graham cut Measure with a JCB, removing the comedy and leaving a starkly disturbing political drama which he directed and performed in himself.

Mary Wollstonecraft
by Ian McLean and Phil Trory

A  three-year project involving workshops, extensive research and a massive  production, following the life, love and tragedy of Mary Wollstonecraft, against  the backdrop of the political turmoil in late 18th century England and the revolution in France.

Mary Wollstonecraft

Dried Fruit from Hell
by Steve Farr

Rastable plays mind games with his two doctors, but he and his fellow inmates can remember nothing. Or, at least, not much. Described as a “tour de force” by The Stratford Herald, Steve’s latest play certainly sent its audiences home with something to think about.
